UAE ,The first country with online tax refund for tourists.
UAE introduced 5% VAT in 2018 and tourists in the country can claim VAT refunds on the purchase made at the Planet Tax Free outlets on leaving the country. Tourist need to spend a minimum of Dh 250 to claim a VAT refund. The biggest challenge for tourist was to carry a lot of papers to claim the refund.
Federal Tax Authority on Wednesday 14 th September 2022 announced the worlds paperless tax refund scheme for tourists. FTA said since the since the system has been linked with retailers all receipt will be generated electronically and tourist will not have to carry paper receipts of their purchase to claim VAT refunds.
In addition, visitors will also able to access details of their VAT refund online. Tourists can check about their refund amounts on the Planet portal once the invoice is posted.
Upon departure from the UAE , tourists can use one of more than 100 self-service kiosks available at the departure points, for a simple, quick and hassle-free experience. Also tourist should scan their passport to access their transactions and select their preferred refund method.
